Waiting

Brief post this morning -

We are about 4 to 5 hours out from getting hit by Hurricane Sandy. Everyone and everything is holding its breath right now. I just heard a bird outside start to cheep and then cut itself off as if from fright (OK, maybe I'm projecting). Our house is battened down; Grace is already begging to eat the quick breads I made in anticipation of losing electricity; cell phones are charged; lanterns and flashlights are ready; tea is being guzzled while we can still make it; books are at hand. We are as ready as we can be.

While I'm not looking forward to the almost-guaranteed power loss coming, I'm thinking it might be good for me to be forcibly removed from the internet for a day or so. Write without distraction. Play Candyland with the kids (the supreme sacrifice!). No chance of looking up supper recipes, making do with what is on hand and doesn't require cooking (electric stove, O woe!). Read library books, my own to myself, the girls' to them.

Above all, I am deeply, humbly thankful to live in a place where loss of electricity is the biggest of our concerns (and possibly a stray tree limb through a window, but that's highly unlikely). Stay safe, coastal friends (and people I don't even know)! Much love and prayers going out to you all.

  5. We're still waiting! This drawn-out period, where everything is building but nothing is happening, is definitely wearing on my nerves. By the time the storm actually hits, I'll be Mrs Bennet, needing smelling salts and calling plaintively for Hill.

On the bright side, I did get two more loaves of quick bread made, apples cooking down for applesauce in the slow cooker, and white-bean, risotto, and kale stew simmering for dinner. So I guess I shouldn't retire to my chambers in confusion quite yet.

  7. Just realized I never updated - the storm didn't even touch us. A smattering of rain, a mild wind, and nothing else. Electricity never even flickered. Things were horrible north and south and east of us, but our little corner of the world was untouched. Humbly grateful.
