When I was younger, I was all fantasy, all the way. After all, hadn't I grown up going through the wardrobe with Lucy; facing Smaug with Bilbo; mastering the magic ring with Jerry, Jimmy, Cathy and Mabel; fighting Arawn's minions with Taran and Eilonwy; questing against the Dark with Will and Bran; and experiencing a new kind of Ivanhoe with Roger and Ann et al?
Believe it or not, fanfiction actually helped me to expand my area of interest. As a young newlywed, living in a new place with no friends or vehicle, and a husband away at work all day, I discovered the joys of fanfiction, and decided to try my hand at an LM Montgomery story. Shirley of Avonlea led to an entire series, which led to two begun and abandoned Jane Austen fics, which led ... you get the idea. In the process, I discovered that I enjoy writing in many different genres. YA Fantasy is still my first and best love, but I've attempted romance, children's, coming-of-age, and historical.
My latest endeavor is a picture book collaboration with an artist friend (we are self-publishing and realizing that we are both in way over our heads - talk about jumping in the deep end and learning to swim!), an older YA (more like college-age) historical-fantasy-adventure, and an older MG/younger YA fantasy set in an ancient Celtic-type world. Busy? Oh yes, but it's all so much fun!
I cannot wait to see your name on the cover of a well-known and well-written series of books! I have enjoyed all your fanfiction so far on the website and I anxiously await your arrival into the realm of writers!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! Are you a fanfic writer, too, or just a reader?
