- Sleeping in my house all by myself is way less scary than sleeping in my house with just me and my kids (which is amusing, because my husband is such a heavy sleeper he would never hear the mass murderer break in or the alien overlord attempt to kidnap us)
- Scones made with goat cheese and rosemary are some of the finest food ever invented
- Homemade chocolate syrup is both easy and better for you than store-bought (although I would recommend using a medium saucepan instead of small, unless you LIKE having boiling chocolate sauce overflow and spill all over your burner and stovetop)
- Sometimes it's good to splurge a little on yourself
- Strawberries you pick yourself taste so, so much better than ones in the store (I already knew this, but I learn it anew every summer)
- Save the Bookstore is an AWESOME excuse to buy books
- One should always carry a packed suitcase in one's trunk in case one suddenly runs into the Doctor and is whisked off on an adventure in the TARDIS
- I am getting much better at recognizing warning signs of depression than I used to be
- Depression (for me) can be staved off with good books, good music (especially piano music), sunshine, friendship, and wordless prayer
- Elmo's World will never, ever stop annoying me
And finally, not a list item, but just to get the word out - there is what looks to be a fantastic documentary on Lloyd Alexander in the works right now, provided they raise enough support before July 1. Check it out and consider donating to be part of this project?
Hope your weekend is filled with sunshine, strawberries, friendship, and books!
I'm glad you found some time to rest this week. I hope your batteries are recharged and you're feeling better.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I think I used up most of the recharging while being a single parent these last few days (Carl was on a business trip), but we're planning a fun, simple weekend that should be good for all of us.
DeleteDon't worry about alien overlords, they are usually off bothering rednecks and Doctor Who.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I should hope for them, instead of fearing them, in order to make it on one (just one! I'm not greedy!) adventure with the Doctor in the TARDIS.
DeleteI haven't seen any ads for strawberry picking this year-- I'm going to have to do research. Handpicked also makes way more awesome jam than does storebought, I discovered (and homemade jam with storebought berries is ALREADY way more awesome than plain storebought jam!) I planned to pick LOADS AND LOADS this summer so as to make LOTS MORE JAM, that would actually LAST until next summer.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I should exactly claim credit, but I know I've been much more open and analytical at talking about depression in the past few months, figuring things out for myself, viewing it as a health issue that needs to be managed rather than a personal fault I'm just prone to. Piano works for me, too. And the rest to an extent.
It DOES help immensely (for me) to be clinical about it - let's see, I'm lethargic and irritable and prone to forgetting to eat and don't feel well rested even when I've had enough sleep ... yep, must be another bout of depression trying to rear its ugly head. Identification and classification is so important in not letting myself feel like "Oh WOE, I'm just a LOSER."
DeleteThis was actually a pretty poor year for strawberries in this area (late frost hit most of the blossoms), but there were a few, and the raspberry crop is phenomenal - we just picked a bunch this morning, and are planning on going back in a few weeks, for raspberries and blueberries. All the produce this time of year makes me giddy; I go to the farmer's market and just want to BUY ALL THE PRETTY, PRETTY FRUIT & VEGETABLES.
I love your new bracelet!
ReplyDeleteI can't WAIT for it to come in the mail - I know it's way too soon, but I keep checking every day to see if it's arrived yet.
DeleteI agree that home made chocolate sauce is the best! I have my mom's recipe and I love it!
ReplyDeleteMy kids aren't big fans of milk, so adding chocolate to a cup of milk is the best way for me to ensure they get enough calcium. Making it myself also means I don't have to worry about any artificial ingredients - score all the way around!
