Lists, Only Slightly Olympic Version

Friday again! This Friday is awesome for me - my mom is in town, and we're doing shopping and taking long walks with the littles, and watching Foyle's War and drinking white wine in the evenings, and just in general having a fantastic time. In between the prep for her arrival, though, I did manage to find some fun links for your perusal this week.

First up: the Olympic links!

Awkward Figure Skating Faces vs Awkward Diving Faces. The title says it all.

Mo Farah is another of those athletes whose story made me weep and cheer and feel hope for humanity. And I love the pictures in this article.

Joy has decided she adores tennis, which means I need to learn more about it than just "Holy cow Roger Federer is cute." This article about Andy Murray seems a good place to start.

Your Olympic Athlete Body Match. According to this, I have the perfect build for table tennis. Too bad I either swing wildly and miss or hit the ball into the next county every time I try to play.

Non-Olympic links!

Any news about Benedict Cumberbatch is worth reading. I'm thinking I'm going to have to watch Parade's End when it finally gets over here.

If anyone ever refers to me as a "mommy writer," I just might lose it. Glad to know I'm not the only one sick of seeing "mommy" used as an adjective.

This article decrying the "niceness" of writers on social media was laughable. Number One: writers are not obligated to be mean to each other just so reviewers and critiquers don't look bad. Number Two: False niceness is deplorable, yes, but did it ever occur to the author of the article that writers might actually be genuinely happy and enthusiastic for each other, and might be genuinely kind? Apparently not.

I find Oxford Dictionary's collection of "proper terms" very helpful. And amusing. I particularly like the "faith of merchants;" the "sloth of bears," and the "pandemonium of parrots."

Most people have already seen NPR's list of the 100 "best" teen books, but in case you haven't, I include it here. I am horrified that Lloyd Alexander isn't included on there AT ALL, but pleased to see L'Engle, Susan Cooper, Diana Wynne Jones, and Patricia C Wrede are, and very pleased that the Betsy-Tacy books squeaked in at #100.

Have a wonderful weekend, friends!

  1. Hi Louise,

Interesting "article" on the niceness of writers/authors/etc. in social media. Too bad the author assumes that (1) no one is honest enough to not like something and say it (where's he been?), and that (2) all positive comments are fake. But, he's certainly welcome to his opinion. *shrugs*

Have a great day with your Mom!

  2. Haha cool! I took the body match quiz and I'm the same body type as an equestrian, which makes sense since I rode horses for many years :D Enjoy your quality mom-daughter time! My mom will be in town in a couple weeks for my bday and I'll have some with her then.

  5. Hmm I know for me I enjoy other writers what they go through is what I go through. Sometimes being nice is just being nice.
