Winner!

And the winner of the Rising:Resistance giveaway (chosen by a highly scientific method of having my kids draw numbers to narrow it down to two, and then making my husband take a break from studying Aramaic to pick the final choice) is ...

Kirsten Lopresti!

Congratulations, Kirsten! I'll try to get the book emailed to you today. I hope you love it!

Thank you to everyone who entered.

  1. And in completely unrelated news *ahem*:

Strawberry Biscuits, as apparently clipped from some newspaper some time ago. So much for proper citations.

    1 cup diced strawberries
    3 T sugar (divided)
    2 cups flour
    1 T baking powder
    1/4 tsp baking soda
    1/4 tsp salt
6 T cold butter cut into 1/4 inch pieces
    2/3 cup buttermilk
2 T turbinado sugar (I have done this with regular sugar-- it probably does not have quite the same effect, but will do in a pinch)

Preheat oven to 450. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper (another step I skipped, but I can't remember what I did instead).

Toss the strawberries with 1 to 2 T sugar and set aside.

Sift together flour, 1 T sugar, baking powder, soda, and salt. Cut in the butter with a pastry blender.

Stir in the strawberries, then the buttermilk until moistened.

Lightly knead dough until it holds together. Pat or roll 3/4 inch thing and cut with 2" biscuit cutter. Place on baking sheet and sprinkle with turbinado sugar. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes or until light brown.

I think this is what I'm sending in to school with my son on his birthday. :)

    1. Thank you! We had family out for Joy's skating show last weekend, and we had lots of strawberries left over from Sunday's breakfast. I already made a strawberry cake, and still have about 3-4 of sliced berries left!
